Edwin Black’s Second Persona
Marvel’s Agent Carter is filled with thrills and mysteries that take place throughout the series. Edwin Black’s concept of the second persona revolves around the idea that there is an implied audience, and the implied audience can be interpreted through actions that take place. With this method, the intended audience is not taken into account because the purpose of the second persona is to discover who the implied audience is.
Whenever we see a show produced after a marvel comic or character, the lead is usually a male who has super powers. In agent carter we see a female lead who does not have super powers, but does not need them because she is strong and is assertive that she can accomplish what any male with super powers can. According to Marvel’s official website, “Agent Peggy Carter lived in a different time when women weren't recognized as being as smart or as tough as their male counterparts. But no one should ever underestimate Peggy” (marvel). The official Marvel website is describing Peggy Carter’s website and how people shouldn’t underestimate her just because she is a female and because of the time period Peggy Carter lived in where women were not equal to men.
The implied audience in Agent Carter is targeted towards women who also have to deal with the discrimination and inequalities that Agent Carter had to deal with. She proved herself and overcame all of the obstacles that she stumbled upon and that is the lesson that the writers and producers of the show want young women to grasp. They want young women to believe in themselves and be able to accomplish what they set their minds to and not just because they are women, they can’t accomplish what men have accomplished in the past.

  1. Bingo. She's a feminist role model :)

A couple of notes, as you adjust this for your final post:

The implied audience IS an intended audience; it's just not the ACTUAL audience. It's imaginary, not embodied.

Keep an eye on formatting -- italicize the show title throughout, capitalize Peggy's name throughout, and capitalize Marvel throughout your final post :)

Don't forget to include a bibliographic reference for your cited material (in this case Marvel's website).
